Harborne’s Farmers Market is now a well and
truly successful addition to the High Street. It
is held opposite the Clock Tower from 9am to
2pm on the second Saturday of every month.
Organized by Sketts, under the Birmingham
City Council license and in conjunction with
the Harborne Traders Association, it brings
much needed footfall to the whole area.
Sketts are extremely proud that the Farmers
Market has remained genuine and is steadfast in
its strict criteria that all produce must be locally
produced.
There are 3 golden rules
1; Produce
must be local which means within a 30-mile
radius.
2; Producers must sell their own produce.
All other produce should contain local ingredients
where appropriate.
3; The person behind the
stall must be the producer, close family member
or an employee involved with the production.
This allows customers to ask questions about the
produce.
This has proved no mean feat being situated
in the city but the farmers have continued to
show their support in return to keeping it authentic.
Russell Dean of Sketts said, “We have seen
many other farmers markets turn into a mishmash
of trades that have nothing to do with
farmers but
we believe that the public want to support their
local farmers and want to be assured that the produce
is local and genuine.” There is much produce
on offer including a specialist mushroom
stall, a variety of meat and vegetables, organic
produce, seasonal game, honey, cheese, eggs &
chickens, wines & ales, bread and there is even a“snoggable” garlic stall.
The Christmas market to be held on
Saturday 13th December promises to be extremely
festive with some excellent food ideas and producers
are always willing to offer advice on their
produce including recipes.
Bob Flack, Harborne Village Centre
Manager stated, “We are proud of our Farmers
Market in Harborne, which has proved hugely
successful over the last two years. There has
been a noticeable increase in footfall whenever
the markets are held. In these difficult times, the
Farmers market is a real tonic.”
