With our enthusiasm for making sure markets bring whole families out and about in the town centres, the launch of Banbury market under Sketts management
on Easter Saturday was a great opportunity to give the Easter Rabbit permission to get out and about with giveaway Easter eggs for the children. Local radio, Banbury
Sound, joined in the celebrations, with mascot Buzz the
Bee on hand to promote the new-style market and set up some live broadcasting.
Earlier in the year, after a lengthy process of selection
amongst stiff opposition, we were delighted that the
local district council - Cherwell - selected Sketts as the
new operators behind this high profile market, located
amongst a recent multi-million pound town centre
renewal programme.
“Even the rain couldn't dampen enthusiasm for the launch of the new look Banbury
marketplace. After all
the hard work
involved, it is
heartening to hear
comments from visitors about how
much better the area
looks now that
improvements have been made."

Communities, Urban and
Rural Services, Chris
Rothwell. |

On launch day, despite the April showers, it was a great opportunity to follow up earlier
discussions with existing traders and to talk to the shoppers, to find out how they’d like
the market to develop.
We aim to provide a great service to all - whether they represent the existing High Street or town centre, the
buying public or of course, the market traders
themselves. That’s the reason why,on market days, you’ll
always find a member of our team out and about and
ready to help and advise.

Investing in a bright future
Whether ‘investing in the future’ means helping young
people, awareness of environmental factors or simply
keeping the market stalls looking fresh and up-to-date,
Sketts are pleased to have made a few good moves in
recent months.
If, like us, you believe that helping young people
approach their future with a realistic and businesslike
head on their shoulders, read about the part we play in
the Young Enterprise scheme.

The environmental benefits of LPG engines are clear for
commercial vehicles like ours that operate in and
around town centres, so many of our vehicles are now
dual-fuelled.
Finally, we’ve made a major investment in new stalls
and canopies, some for the re-launch of the high profile
Banbury’s town centre market whilst new
orange and white market stall canopies have been
acquired for Warwick market to complement the
regeneration work in the town square, with its smart
café culture and the recent reopening of the historic
Museum after a programme of improvements.

True to the ideals of local
produce marketed by the
farmers and growers
themselves

Aware of the need for Farmers’ Markets to
promote a genuine selling point - fresh
local produce - Sketts have put into place
a farmers’ accreditation scheme which is
tougher than the national standard.
To help promote the markets, there’s
some new attractive branding making its
appearance on signage, banners and
leaflets.
Customers will return time and
again because they have
confidence that Sketts’ Farmers’
Markets are exactly ‘what it says
on the tin’, and that they will find
only locally produced food or
plants brought to market by the
growers or producers themselves. It gives the
customer a feel-good alternative to supermarket
shopping to buy quality produce.

Of wide appeal for locals and a
real visitor attraction, Sketts will
once again be setting up stalls in
Pershore and Broadway during
May, June and August. These
traditional markets celebrate
renowned and much prized local seasonal produce -
asparagus, strawberries and plums.

Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise (YE) enables students
to set up and run a ‘live business’
(www.young-enterprise.org.uk). Sketts,
involved with the scheme for 14 years,
also supports the competitive element
with a cash prize.
Part of the process is a Trade Fair in
Leamington Spa open to YE students across the UK. As a
member of the panel selecting winners of ‘Best Stand’ and
‘Most Innovative Company’ categories, Mark Skett says “The
judges look at communication, teamwork, problem solving,
customer focus and product development. What a great
preparation for a future career the YE scheme gives: it’s a
privilege to be involved."
Tony Price, National Trade Fair Chairman for YE, says
"Companies like Sketts contribute so much to the scheme, and
bring honest but encouraging feedback to these young people
- an essential introduction to the demands of running a
business." |
Maytime is Gardencraft time
May is the month when gardeners invest
in their gardens and that’s exactly when
Gardencraft markets are taking place in
2010.
Choose from busy shopping street
locations such as The Parade at Sutton
Coldfield or Solihull town centre. The
market at Warwick is part of a
programme of gardening events in
different locations that include the
grounds of Warwick Castle, and all within
walking distance of the Market Square.
Solihull’s two day ‘gardening weekend’ is
a well-promoted event with Sketts’ Gardencraft an
established part of the schedule.
The dates are:
Market Square, Warwick Sunday, 9th May
Market Way, Coventry Saturday, 15th May
The Parade, Sutton Coldfield Saturday, 22nd May
Mell Square, Solihull Saturday , 29th & Sunday 30th May

One of the delights of Craft Fairs held over the
Christmas period, is the atmosphere created by colourful
stalls, all set to draw in the customers. As an added
incentive, Sketts ran Best Dressed Stall competitions and
were delighted with the enthusiasm (and skills) of
stallholders. Winners were given a free stall for that day.

Retail markets . . . bringing in the shoppers
to benefit town centres
Over the years, we have built on experience to judge exactly
where and how a market will prosper, what draws in the
shoppers and visitors and what makes them see the market
as a regular destination, to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
We recognise that the market should get the central location
it deserves, not tucked away in an inaccessible corner of a
back street or in some out of town location.
Just as we select our market sites, we are careful too that
our traders match high standards of customer service. We
have championed a Shoppers’ Charter (on display at all our
markets) that gives customers peace of mind and safeguards
the reputation of our retailers. Sketts do their best to help and advise start-up businesses
and we have a proud reputation for providing stalls - totally
free of charge - to over 300 local and national charities
across our range of events. |

Cherwell District Council has selected Stratford-upon-Avon based EG Skett, amidst strong competition, to operate Banbury’s Thursday and Saturday markets from April 2010.
The news of the decision came after the council’s consideration of Sketts’ proposals for the market to play an important part in creating a vibrant town centre shopping destination.
With a portfolio of event management including retail and specialist markets in towns like Stratford-upon-Avon, Kenilworth and Warwick, Sketts also runs farmers’ markets in 12 separate locations, including the high profile Birmingham city centre Brindleyplace Market.
Cllr Nigel Morris Cherwell, portfolio holder for community safety, street scene and rural services, said: “We chose a company that believes in a hands-on approach to market management.
“Its tender includes plans for a revamp with new stalls and canopies which, along with the redevelopment of Parson’s Street and Market Place, will transform that part of the town centre.
“With the provision of built-in power supply, the market will be an attractive location for traders.”
MD Paul Skett added: “The news that we’ve been awarded the Banbury contract is an exciting start to a very promising 2010 for stallholders. |
Sketts hopes to make Banbury as vibrant as Birmingham city centre’s Brindleyplace Market, pictured here |
“We’re pleased that Cherwell District Council has actively supported our commitment to safeguarding the interests of current traders, and we’re taking every opportunity to talk to them over the next few weeks well before Sketts sets out its Banbury stalls for the first time in April.
“Naturally, we’re also looking forward to introducing new traders to this this busy market town.”
